Organizations

There are many organizations out there trying to make a difference. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is for the conservation and restoration of coral reefs and many marine ecological hot spots. The organization "ropes off" designated areas and prevents the degredation of those few areas. Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) is a non-profit organization that was created to make the fish trade more responsible through education and limiting harmful fishing practices. This prevents any one species from being overexploited. Global Coral Reef Alliance (GCRA) grow coral and will teach others the technique in the act to help prevent illegal removal (6).

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) : The official federal definition of an MPA is: "any area of the marine environment that has been reserved by federal, state, tribal, territorial, or local laws or regulations to provide lasting protection for part or all of the natural and cultural resources therein." -- Executive Order 13158 (May 2000)

This reservation of space helps to protect many different types of marine diversity.
